Hairstylists as Healers

Mini Documentary

Subculture Research

This mini documentary highlights four hairstylists from the larger group I interviewed, each offering a unique lens into the world behind the chair. I met with them in person, listening as they shared their experiences, the moments that shaped them, and the clients who left lasting marks on their hearts. They open up about what their work truly means to them, and whether they see themselves as informal therapists, a role many of them step into without ever being trained for it. Throughout their stories, you’ll notice an emotional shift: the comfort that settles in, the release clients feel, and the deep sense of being cared for. In their own words, they reveal how and why hairstylists often become confidants, healers, and steady anchors in people’s lives.

My Most Intersting Takeaways

People often remember who did their hair during major moments of their lives, graduations, funerals, breakups, birthdays, fresh starts.

Some say that their stylist understands who they are becoming better than certain friends or family.

The salon chair creates a rare “pause” in people’s lives.

Stylists hold the unique role of witnessing people through multiple phases of life.

Survey Findings

80% of women say they trust their stylist’s product recommendations more than social media influencers or online reviews.

56% of women say they’ve stayed with a stylist longer than they should out of loyalty or emotional comfort.

65% describe the salon experience as therapeutic or “like a form of low-key therapy.”

70% say their stylist helps boost their confidence “beyond just appearance.”

What I Would Tell the World About Hairstylists

Treat hairstylists gently.

They carry more emotion than you think, yours, the client before you, the client after you, all layered on top of whatever they’re navigating in their own lives.

They hold stories that were never meant to be theirs, burdens they never asked for, and secrets they never repeat.

And somehow, they still show up with kindness, creativity, and care.

So meet them with patience.

Meet them with gratitude.

Meet them with the softness they give to everyone else.
